Five Reasons Why We Can Call Today “Good Friday” | Easter 2020
Topic: Mark
Hebrews 12:2
“… fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God”.
Five reasons why we can call today “Good Friday”:
1. Jesus’ Sacrifice Demonstrates God’s Love
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 4:10
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
2. Jesus Completes His Earthly Mission
Matthew 1:21
21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
3. Jesus is Sacrificed in Our Place
2 Corinthians 5:21
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
1 Peter 3:18a
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
1 Peter 2:24
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
4. Jesus’ Sacrifice Offers us Forgiveness
Colossians 2:13b-14
God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
Ephesians 1:7
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace
Romans 3:25
God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood —to be received by faith
5. Jesus is Raised to Life
Acts 2:23-24
23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
